Montserrat is a mountain near Barcelona in the Catalonia region of Spain. The name Montserrat literally means jagged mountain and is used because of the peculiar aspect of the mountains, which are visible from a great distance. It is a Monastery and a Sanctuary where spirituality and culture come together against a spectacular natural backdrop. There is a famous statue, the Virgin of Montserrat in the sanctuary. It is a miracle- working statue of the Black Madonna, which in Catalonia is called Moreneta ( The little dark skinned one) Getting There: You can go by bus, car or a train. You will have to take the train from Placa Espanya train station. You will have to get off at Montserrat Aeri train station and take a cable car to the monastery. Location: 56km (35 mi) NW of Barcelona, 592km (368 mi) E of Madrid Hours: Daily 8-10:30am, noon-6:30pm When to go: You can go any day but avoid going on Sundays. Many locals flock to the site on Sunday and it is very much crowded.
